SHAKATAK - live at the playhouse VERÖFFENTLICHUNG: 23.08.2004

Filmed & Recorded at: Playhouse Theatre, Epsom. 28th May 2003

Shakatak have enjoyed a level of success and a career longevity rarely paralleled in contemporary popular music - but then they are a particularly unusual group. Because of the nature of the music, their fan base is one that is very far reaching while always retaining it's "underground" element.

This paradox sees the band, who are known primarily as serious jazz-funk musicians, enjoying both high "cult" status and instant recognition as a household name.

Having garnered massive commercial acheivements in the UK, Shakatak went on to score unprecedented success in Japan, and then throughout the world. Their music simply refuses to be categorised.

In the early 80's they were the first group to successfully fuse the elements of jazz, latin and funk into popular music on their debut album "Drivin' Hard", and they went on to acheive the perfect blend of these influences with the classic track "Nightbirds" from the album of the same name. On this specially filmed live concert in front of an invited audience of Shak-fans, the "Nightbirds" track is extended into a long jam session while still keeping it's essential character. The follow up album "Invitations" is represented here with the title track kicking off the show, leading to a string of vibrant versions of the early hit songs including "Easier Said Than Done", Day By Day" and "Street Walkin'", as well as one of the newer songs "Sunshine".

The up-tempo "Don't Say That Again" turns the Epsom Playhouse Theatre into a Rio De Janiro night club, as the band storm through this latin fire-cracker, and then the beautiful ballad "Lonely Afternoon"is exquisitly performed by lead singer Jill Saward, leading into Bill Sharpe's piano solo of quiet reflection.

George Anderson's thunderous bass guitar announces the arrival of the second half of the concert, and he is soon joined by drummer Roger Odell as they kick into a groove which demonstrates the strong under-pining of all of Shakatak's music.

So here is the cool musicianship, the sophisticated harmonies, the rhythms that just won't stop, the songs that over a twenty year period have been in the background of our day to day lives, but also it's plain to see that as a live band Shakatak have few equals. The "serious" side of the band is left behind in the recording studios, and on stage the energy, the communication, and above all, the sheer joy of making music together, comes bounding over
the footlights straight into the cameras and the faces of the audience.

So. ..sit back, relax, and enjoy the experience of Shakatak live in the

“Listening to the Human League, is like listening to 1980!”. These words came from David Bowie in 1979, a year or so before Jo Catherall, Susanne Sulley and the big hits all materialised. The Human League that Bowie referred to was a futuristic synth, vocals and slide-show experience, not a band in the normal sense.

Formed in Sheffield in 1977 by Martyn Ware, Ian Craig-Marsh and singer Adi Newton (and called The Future), former hospital porter Phil Oakey was invited to join, he says, just because he was tall. Adi left (eventually to join Clockdva) and Adrian Wright joined (on visuals and synth) shortly after their debut single ‘Being Boiled’ (out on the indie Fast Product label) was voted NME’s single of the week in summer 1978. It didn’t chart then, but got to number 6 when reissued in 1982. But it did help to get them a tie-in with Virgin Records.

Their EP ‘Holiday ‘80’ got them on Top Of The Pops, and the next single ‘Empire State Human’ remains in their set and is featured on this DVD. A modestly successful debut album Reproduction was followed by Travelogue which charted at 14 in May 1980.
Ego problems between Martin and Phil worsened as Oakey naturally became the band’s focus. So in October Ware and Marsh jumped ship (to form Heaven 17) just ten days before a major tour was due to start. Within days, Oakey spotted Jo and Susanne at Sheffield’s Crazy Daisy Disco and asked them to join. They did, even though they were studying for ‘A’ levels at the time.

1981 was the year that the Human League went Big Time. ‘Boys and Girls’ was the first single with the girls and another new face, Ian Burden, on bass and synth – it scraped into the charts at 48 in February. A couple of months later ‘The Sound Of The Crowd’ went to 12 ; shortly after that guitarist Jo Callis joined from the Rezillos. Then ‘Love Action’ got to number 3 in July. ‘Open Your Heart’ reached 6 in October, and everybody’s soundtrack for Christmas 1981 was chart-topper ‘Don’t You Want Me Baby’. These all came from the 5-million-copies-plus Dare album which made the band a mega act on either side of the Atlantic.

The hits kept coming in 1983 with ‘Fascination’ ‘Mirror Man’ and ‘The Lebanon’ even though band members were feeling the pressure of trying to come up with a worthy follow-up to Dare.
1984’s Hysteria went Top 3 in May and in October. Oakey also collaborated with his mentor and biggest influence Eurobeat maestro Giorgio Moroder on the top 5 single ‘Together in Electric Dreams’ (they subsequently cut a whole album called Chrome ).

Burden and Callis left before 1986’s Crash album. Produced by the Minneapolis soul/R&B team Jam/Lewis, this duo - the band themselves acknowledge - saved the Human League. Off Crash came the ‘Human’ single which got 8 in the UK but was a massive number 1 in America. After 1988’s successful Greatest Hits, 1990s Romantic only got to 24 and the single from it ‘Heart Like A Wheel’ (included on this DVD) scraped into the top 30. Virgin dropped them in late-1990.

They later signed with East West and 1995’s Octopus took them back into the top 10.
The three main players’ solid partnership continued through the ‘90s, focused on their co-owned Redtape Studios complex in Sheffield.

This live DVD - filmed in Brighton in December – marks the climax to their hugely successful ‘03 tour. It can’t be called a comeback tour: media exposure of them and their music – in clever car commercials or television rockumentaries - guarantees that the Human League will never lose profile. After all their brand of synth-pop was the sound of the 1980s.

leider ist das cover der DVD noch nicht bekannt.

After 19 Years In The Vaults, Live Aid, The Greatest Show On Earth, Is Officially Released On DVD 07/15/2004 Warner Vision International is proud to announce that the biggest concert in Rock n' Roll history, Live Aid, will be released on DVD worldwide on November 1st, 2004. The unforgettable global event, staged in London and Philadelphia on Saturday 13, July 1985, was watched on television by over 1.5 billion people around the world. These concerts led to pledged donations and royalties of over $140 million towards the devastating famine in Africa.

Billed as The Greatest Show on Earth, Live Aid was described by the world's media as 'The Global Jukebox', 'The Day Rock and Roll Changed the World' and 'The greatest live show ever'.

Live Aid was cited as the second most memorable event in two generations and only two weeks ago was defined, in a consumer poll, as the single greatest moment in the 50-year history of rock 'n' roll, beating not only the launch of MTV and Elvis' first record but also topping the poll ahead of the seminal festival of the 60's, Woodstock.

Live Aid, the greatest artists playing the greatest music for the world's poorest people and changing the global political agenda forever.

Live Aid was uniquely staged simultaneously on two continents and features an unbelievable line up of major Rock & Pop acts that took to the stage in July 1985 at London's Wembley and Philadelphia's JFK Stadiums.

Even today, after almost 20 years, the line up of stars put together by Bob Geldof in a matter of months remains both remarkable and unsurpassed. It is a who's who of contemporary music; united in their unequivocal support for Live Aid to prevent mass death for starving people.

The extraordinary line-up includes: U2, Sting, David Bowie, Elton John, George Michael, The Who, Madonna, Queen, Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, Duran Duran, Neil Young, Ozzy Osbourne & Black Sabbath, Spandau Ballet, Dire Straits, Paul Weller, Sade, Paul Young, Adam Ant, The Boomtown Rats, The Cars, Bryan Ferry, Bryan Adams, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Crosby Stills & Nash, The Beach Boys, Judas Priest, The Style Council, Simple Minds, Thompson Twins, Nile Rodgers, Hall & Oates, Status Quo, The Pretenders, Elvis Costello, Howard Jones, Teddy Pendergrass, Alison Moyet, and Kenny Logins.

Since that great day this historic concert footage has remained locked away and the announcement of its imminent DVD release is therefore indeed momentous. Unscrupulous bootleggers have tried to sell the concert on the black market but have been shut down and prosecuted on a number of occasions.

This has forced the Band Aid Trust to seek permission from all the artists to be included in the four-disc Live Aid set, an eventuality that was never anticipated at the time of Live Aid.

Now in time for the 20th anniversary of Live Aid and after 19 years in the vaults, Warner Vision International will release those unforgettable performances on a Live Aid, 4 DVD package out on 1st November.

Currently in production with the master videotapes and over 10 hours of performances the DVD will be superbly presented and re-mastered in multi-channel surround sound and stereo audio options. Within the set additional gems include the "Food, Trucks & Rock 'n' Roll" documentary (sub-titled in 8 languages) and inspirational Live Aid performances from other parts of the globe.

Live Aid on DVD is the most eagerly anticipated music DVD of the decade.

The Band Aid Trust is obliged to maximise its assets and in a hotly-contested open bidding invitation Warners secured a licence to represent and distribute, worldwide, the Live Aid 4-disc set. Live Aid remains the asset of the Band Aid Trust.

Warner Vision International's Ray Still commented. "There is only one music event that begs the question 'Where were you on that day?' and that is Live Aid. Over 1.5 billion TV viewers tuned in, on July 13 1985, to the extraordinary event that was Live Aid."

"It's an understatement to say that it's a great pleasure and an honour for Warner Vision to be involved in bringing all the extraordinary moments and performances that encapsulated Live Aid to DVD for the first time".

Bob Geldof added: "Twenty years ago they not only played 'real good for free' they took an issue that was nowhere on the agenda of the political world and placed it at the very top."

"They also kept, directly or indirectly, millions of people alive and in so doing they reminded 1.5 billion people that individuals are not powerless in the face of monstrous human tragedy."

"By buying the Live Aid DVD that day continues far off into some distant but hopefully better future for all those people in whose name those great artists played."

Since the concert the Band Aid Trust in the UK alone has raised over $50 million and continues to operate in famine affected countries in Africa.

From their early childhood all five Liverpool-born Christian brothers sang acapella harmonies together in the family home. Inspired by American vocal groups such as the Temptations and Persuasions, the roots of the band that Garry, Russell, and Roger went on to form go back to the early-1980s. At that point they called themselves
either Equal Temperament or Joe Public for semi-pro pub and club gigs.

They became The Christians in 1984 having met keyboard and guitar player Henry Priestman on the Liverpool studio session scene. Amazingly, Henry’s middle name also happens to be Christian, and he joined them from the Liverpool group It’s Immaterial.

Many weekends throughout 1985 were spent at Henry’s flat working on material and carving out their niche – socially-aware soul. The main songwriting team at that stage was Henry and his friend from schooldays Mark Herman. Demo tapes were then taken around London record companies, and in the summer of 1986 Island Records signed them up. The latter part of that year was spent in the studio working on their debut album with producer Laurie Latham.

The first of five singles taken from the album – ‘Forgotten Town’ – reached the UK top 30. Even so, Roger decided to quit after the second hit ‘Hooverville’ and pursue a solo career.
The Christians was released in October 1987 and reached number 2 in the UK charts, eventually going triple platinum with UK sales of over 1 million. Three further hits followed – ‘When The Fingers Point’ ‘Ideal World’ and ‘Born Again’ – but the Top Ten eluded them until their charity cover version of the Isley Brothers’ classic ‘Harvest For The World’ went to number 8 in October 1988. This was promoted with what became an award-winning animated video. Much of that year was spent touring the UK and Europe, including a prestige showcase support for Fleetwood Mac at Manchester City’s Maine Road stadium.

1989 saw the Christians collaborating with Sir Paul McCartney, Gerry Marsden and Holly Johnson on ‘Ferry ‘Cross The Mersey’ - a number 1 single released to raise money for victims’ families in the Hillsborough football stadium tragedy. That spring the band was studio-bound with Laurie, recording their second album Colours. This time the drum machines and sequencers used on the debut were replaced by top flight session men such as drummer Steve Ferrone.

In 1990 Colours went top five in many European countries and was supported by a lot of touring.
The songs for 1992’s Happy In Hell album were more of a group effort and several producers – including Latham – worked with the band. The mid-1990s were spent touring and also promoting the Greatest Hits release – their last on the Island label.
The farewell concert featured the band as an unplugged trio at 1995’s Liverpool Black Awards, after which Garry relocated to Paris to work on a solo project for East West Records.

In 1999 a one-off reunion developed, by popular demand, into a 36-date British tour: the lineup there was ‘unplugged’ and the same as on this DVD: namely, frontman Garry, Russell on keyboards, with Henry and Paul Campbell on guitars. The Christians began work on their latest album in 2001: Prodigal Sons came out in autumn 2003 and has been received with strong critical acclaim.
