TALKING HEADS - remain the light DUALDISC RHINO / WARNER 76452 VERÖFFENTLICHUNG: 10.02.2006

Talking Heads: David Byrne (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion); Jerry Harrison (guitar, keyboards, bass, percussion); Tina Weymouth (keyboards, bass, percussion); Chris Frantz (keyboards, drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Nona Hendryx (vocals); Adrian Belew (guitar); Brian Eno (vocals, keyboards, bass); Robert Palmer, Jon Hassell. Recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, The Bahamas, and Sigma Sound, New York, New York. This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. Talking Heads: David Byrne (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, percussion); Jerry Harrison (organ, keyboards, synthesizer, background vocals); Tina Weymouth (bass guitar); Chris Frantz (drums). Additional personnel: Robert Palmer (vocals); Brian Eno (guitar, piano, synthesizer, background vocals); Adrian Belew (guitar); Nona Hendryx (background vocals). Recording information: Sigma Sound, New York, New York (1980). Though the previous album FEAR OF MUSIC provided a bit of foreshadowing, Talking Heads fans could never have guessed what was in store for them with the release of REMAIN IN LIGHT. A visionary work of innovation and inspiration, it's arguably one of the finest albums of the 1980s. The band leaves behind the two-guitars-over-a-quirky-rock-beat ethic of their previous work, adopting a funky, modal approach. Abandoning traditional song form and chord progressions, the tunes here are built around layers of overdubbed keyboard, guitar and percussion parts that weave around each other in an almost fugue-like manner, relying on the adding and subtracting of elements in the mix for dynamics, instead of on chord changes and structural development. It was a radical approach for a rock band, and it's reflected in the lyrics as well. Byrne abandons his urban paranoia of old in favor of a more spiritual, third world-influenced style of writing. Adrian Belew injects some grit with his postpunk-psychedelia guitar work (suggestive of his upcoming work with King Crimson, as is the overall sound of REMAIN IN LIGHT). This one is for the ages.

TALKING HEADS - speaking in tongues DUALDISC RHINO / WEA 8122733442 VERÖFFENTLICHUNG: 10.02.2006

This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. On REMAIN IN LIGHT, the Heads fused their twitchy, intellectual geek-rock sensibilities with an organic, spiritual funkiness that catapulted them into a new artistic realm, virtually unfettered by the shackles of their "new wave" past. SPEAKING IN TONGUES picks up where that album left off, expanding on the band's newfound funk aesthetic and even upping the danceability quotient a notch or two. The Heads let their hair down a bit more here than on REMAIN IN LIGHT, but while the tone is a bit less serious (as on the party-starting "Burning Down The House,") the highly developed conceptual sensibilites of Byrne and company are still at work, even without the assistance of former producer Brian Eno. Some of the previous album's airy abstractions are stripped away here, to make more room on the dance floor. Tunes like "Girlfriend is Better" attack both the feet and the mind, in typically quirky Talking Heads style. "This Must Be the Place/Naive Melody" stands out as a pretty, affecting ballad about finding a sense of belonging (it's melodic charms were so pervasive it was eventually covered by folk-rocker Shawn Colvin).

    CD:

    01. Burning Down The House
    02. Making Flippy Floppy
    03. Girlfriend Is Better
    04. Slippery People
    05. I Get Wild/Wild Gravity
    06. Swamp
    07. Moon Rocks
    08. Pull Up The Roots
    09. This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)

    BONUS-TRACKS:

    10. Two Note Swivel (Unfinished Outtake)
    11. Burning Down the House (Alternate Version)

    DVD:

    01. Original album in 5.1 surround sound
    02. Photo gallery
    03. Burning down the house (Video)
    04. This must be the place (Naive melody) (Video)

TALKING HEADS - little creatures DUALDISC RHINO / EMI 3486602 VERÖFFENTLICHUNG: 10.02.2006

Recorded at Sigma Sound, New York, New York. This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. After the abstract funk experimentation of REMAIN IN LIGHT and SPEAKING IN TONGUES, the Heads decided to return to their roots with LITTLE CREATURES. They abandoned the modal, polyrhythmic approach in favor of the two-guitars/4/4 pop structures of yore. While LITTLE CREATURES is the band's most accessible, radio-friendly album, it's not a step backwards by any means, because as they return to the quirky "new wave" style that made them famous, they bring a well-earned sophistication (both harmonic and lyrical) to the table. These advances allow the band to knock out a crop of winners, like the anti-anthem "Road To Nowhere," the semi-mystical (but still damn catchy) "And She Was" and the we've-got-a-baby-now, let's-party-with-him rocker "Stay Up Late." Nothing here is as groundbreaking as BUILDINGS AND FOOD, but it's still the Talking Heads, full of idiosyncratic charm and smart-but-infectious tunes.

    CD:

    01. And She Was
    02. Give Me Back My Name
    03. Creatures Of Love
    04. The Lady Don't Mind
    05. Perfect World
    06. Stay Up Late
    07. Walk It Down
    08. Television Man
    09. Road To Nowhere

    10. Road To Nowhere - Early Version - Previously Unreleased - Bonus Track
    11. And She Was - Early Version - Previously Unreleased - Bonus Track
    12. Television Man - Extended Mix

    DVD:

    01. Original album in 5.1 surround sound
    02. And She Was - Bonus Video
    03. Road To Nowhere - Bonus Video

TALKING HEADS - true stories DUALDISC RHINO / EMI 3486662 VERÖFFENTLICHUNG: 10.02.2006

Heads leader David Byrne directed the film True Stories, which layed out the surreal vision of modern American life often expressed in Talking Heads songs. In the film, the songs Byrne wrote for it are sung by the actors, but this album features the Talking Heads' own versions of those compositions. Though it came towards the end of their career, TRUE STORIES is perhaps the most '80s-sounding Heads album, the recordings full of compression, electronic percussion and synthesizers. The songs pick up on the heavily rhythmic, world music-inflected sound the band established a few years earlier, but with more of a pop/rock compositional approach. Despite the relative lack of sonic experimentation or quirkiness, there are some solid tunes here, like the catchy, funky "Puzzlin' Evidence" and the album's sole hit "Wild, Wild Life," an ironic rocker that could have come straight off LITTLE CREATURES.

    CD:

    01. Love For Sale
    02. Puzzlin' Evidence
    03. Hey Now
    04. Papa Legba
    05. Wild Wild Life
    06. Radio Head
    07. Dream Operator
    08. People Like Us
    09. City Of Dreams

    BONUS-TRACKS:

    10. Wild Wild Life - Extended Mix
    11. Papa Legba - Pop Staples Vocal Version - Previously Unreleased
    12. Radio Head - Tito Larriva Vocal Version - Previously Unreleased

    DVD:

    01. Original album in 5.1 surround sound
    02. Wild Wild Life - Bonus Video
    03. Love For Sale - Bonus Video

TALKING HEADS - naked DUALDISC RHINO / EMI 3486692 VERÖFFENTLICHUNG: 10.02.2006

Coming at the end of the Talking Heads' discography, NAKED finds the Heads returning to many elements of the complex, polyrhythmic arrangements that marked their work earlier in the decade, prior to the rootsier LITTLE CREATURES. Reflecting a more European influence, NAKED was recorded in Paris and produced by Steve Lillywhite, who brings to bear his gift for making sprawling arrangements sound remarkably down-to-earth and radio-friendly (see U2). The album's truly special guest is former Smith Johnny Marr, who lends his imaginative fretboard work and timeless pop sensibility to tunes such as "Nothing but Flowers," and "Cool Water." Other standouts include "Blind," a bombastic groove that foreshadows Byrne's soon-to-follow solo work. Sparse, spastic, and filled with intellectual social rage, NAKED is at once a return to form and a fitting sendoff for one of music's relentlessly original and truly important forces.

    CD:

    01. Blind
    02. Mr Jones
    03. Totally Nude
    04. Ruby Dear
    05. (Nothing But) Flowers

    09. Big Daddy
    10. Bill
    11. Cool Water

    BONUS-TRACK:

    DVD:

    01. Original album in 5.1 surround sound
    02. Blind - Music Video
    03. Sax And Violins - Music Vid
