Es gibt eine Unmenge an Filmen aus den achtziger Jahren, die nicht nur wegen ihrer Bilder und Storys sondern vor allem durch einzelne Songs auch Heute noch Tief im Bewusstsein vieler Menschen verankert sind. Auf Up Where We Belong - 80's Movie Hits gibt es eine geballte Ladung an bis zum heutigen Tag unvergänglichen Hits aus dieser sehr fruchtbaren Zeit, angefangen bei Joe Cockers und Jennifer Warners "Up Where We Belong" (aus "Ein Offizier und Gentleman") über Huey Lewis & The News und ihr immer noch sehr agil klingendes "The Power Of Love" (aus "Zurück in die Zukunft") bis hin zu Harold Faltermeyers legendärem "Beverly Hills Cop"-Theme "Axel F", das gerade wieder in einer neuen Version des Crazy Frogs die Charts erobert hat.
Gemeinsam ist allen Songs, das sie eine ganze Generation nachhaltig geprägt haben und auch heute noch mit vielen entscheidenden Lebenssituationen von damals in Verbindung gebracht werden: Sei es mit der ersten großen Liebe, dem daraus resultierenden Liebeskummer, oder einem unvergesslichen Urlaub. Songs wie "Call Me" von Blondie (aus "American Gigolo") oder "Pretty In Pink" von Nik Kershaw, aus "Pretty In Pink" mit Molly Ringwald verliehen damals den Filmen ein ganz bestimmtes Flair und sind inzwischen längst Evergreens geworden, die zurecht einen bevorzugten Platz in der Musikgeschichte eingenommen haben.

Aber auf Up Where We Belong - 80's Movie Hits finden sich nicht nur die großen Hits dieser Zeit, sondern auch der eine oder andere Titel, der damals nicht die ihm gebührende Aufmerksamkeit einheimste, wie zum Beispiel "The Hardest Work" von Jesus And Mary Chain (aus "Ist sie nicht wunderbar") oder das auch nach heutigen Maßstäben noch durchaus konkurrenzfähige "Oh Yeah" der Schweizer Elektronik-Pop-Duos Yello (aus "Ferris macht blau"). Und natürlich darf auch Monty Pythons Klassiker "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" nicht fehlen

With its 40th anniversary looming in 2006, Sire Records will be celebrated this fall with a four-disc boxed set. Due Sept. 13 via Sire/Rhino, "Just Say Sire: The Sire Records Story" rounds up 61 tracks on three audio CDs and another 20 music videos on a DVD.

Sire was founded in 1966 by former Billboard staffer Seymour Stein and Richard Gottehrer. The label is perhaps best known for revealing the New York underground rock scene (the Ramones, Television, the Talking Heads) to a worldwide audience in the mid and late 1970s and, years later, rearing the careers of such acts Madonna, the Pretenders and the Smiths.

All of those acts are represented on "Just Say Sire," as are Morrissey, Erasure, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, the Tom Tom Club, Seal, the Cult, Ice-T, k.d. lang, Primal Scream, the Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, My Bloody Valentine, the Replacements, Dinosaur Jr. and Wilco. 2005 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Stein served as the co-producer for the box, overseeing remastering of all the tracks.

The DVD features such clips as Madonna's "Like a Prayer," the Ramones' "Rock'n'Roll High School," the Pretenders' "Brass in Pocket," Echo & the Bunnymen's "The Cutter" and the Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime."
