BOBBY MCFERRIN - vocabularies UNIVERSAL VERÖFFENTLICHUNG: 02.04.2010
Wunderschöne Afrikanische Vokalisen, Take 6-ähnliche Momente, klassische Chorsätze, anspruchsvolle harmonische Bewegungen, komplexe Stimmführungen: Bobby McFerrin entfaltet auf seinem neuen Album Vocabularies einen Gesangskosmos, der in seiner Art einzigartig ist. Die Besetzung und die Art, wie alles entstanden ist, erzeugen physikalische Phänomene: mehr als tausend Stunden im Studio, Sänger wurden einzeln und in kleinen Gruppen aufgenommen, aus über 1400 Gesangsspuren wurde ein virtueller Chor erschaffen - da stellen sich einem die Haare zu Berge. Das Mammutunternehmen, das nach sieben Jahren Arbeit vollendet werden konnte, umfasst Kompositionen von Roger Treece: als Ausgangspunkt wählte er McFerrin-Motive, die er auf dessen CDs und in Bobbies Tonarchiven fand – allein der Durchhör-Prozess fraß hunderte von Stunden. Vocabularies soll die wichtigsten stilistischen Einflüsse verarbeiten, die Bobby McFerrins musikalische Persönlichkeit mitgeprägt haben: Jazz, Klassik, Musik aus Afrika, Lateinamerika, Indien, Rhythm’n Blues, Gospel, Pop. Die Musik ist komplett durchkomponiert, das unterscheidet sie von den meisten Projekten, denen der vielseitige Improvisations- und Stimmartist McFerrin normalerweise nachgeht. McFerrin engagierte für die Aufnahme Sänger unterschiedlichster Couleur: Mitglieder des Voicestra, Sänger aus Jazz, Oper, Rockn’Roll, die Mitglieder des Gesangsensembles The New York Voices. Im Studio wurden später beispielsweise Rhythm’n Blues mit klassischem Chor und afrikanischen Stammesgesängen kombiniert. Das Ergebnis ist wirklich faszinierend, einzigartig und ziemlich gut! Manchmal vermisst man die Linie; zu viele Stile? Soll es ein homogenes Ganzes sein? Immerhin gehen die Stücke bruchlos ineinander über. Ein eindeutiger Charakter, eine klare Handschrift vermitteln sich nur allmählich. Die Grundfarbe ist afrikanischer Prägung: es ist das stärkste verbindende Element. So richtig aus einem Guss ist die Aufnahme jedoch nicht.

Slash ist einer der letzten echten "Gitarrenhelden". Fast 15 Jahre nach seinem Ausstieg von Guns N' Roses brachte der Amerikaner Anfang April das erste Album unter seinem Namen heraus. Und hat dafür eine illustre Schar von Gaststimmen engagiert. Neben den "üblichen Verdächtigen" von Ozzy Osbourne bis Lemmy waren auch Fergie und Nicole Scherzinger mit dem 44-Jährigen im Studio.
Dass ausgerechnet die Sängerinnen von Black Eyed Peas und der Pussycat Dolls mit dem seit einiger Zeit entwöhnten Rocker kooperierten, der früher neben seiner Gitarrenarbeit auch für seine Drogenexzesse bekannt war, stieß manchem Fan sauer auf. Erste Hörproben stellen aber klar: Slash hat sich nicht trendigen Stilen ausgeliefert. "Es ist eine sehr raue Rock 'n' Roll-Platte. Und der Song mit Fergie wird die Leute umwerfen, weil es ein Rock 'n' Roll-Song ist, kein Pop-Song", sagte der Slash, der mit bürgerlichem Namen Saul Hudson heißt, im Interview mit dem britischen Magazin "Classic Rock" (April-Ausgabe).
Scherzinger wurde für ein Duett mit Alice Cooper verpflichtet, das Ergebnis gibt es allerdings nicht auf der regulären CD zu hören, sondern als Bonus-Track diverser Sonderauflagen. Cooper zeigte sich beeindruckt und meinte im "Classic Rock": "Die Zeit der Diven ist vorbei. Jeder hasst Diven, aber jeder liebt ein Rock Chick." Und Scherzinger habe die richtige Stimme dafür.
Logisch scheint die Wahl der männlichen Stimmen. Diese steuerten neben den genannten u.a. Ian Astbury (The Cult), Chris Cornell (Soundgarden), Andrew Stockdale (Wolfmother), Adam Levine, Kid Rock und Iggy Pop bei. Da Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures) auf keinen Platten anderer Künstler singt, nahm er am Schlagzeug Platz und spielte mit Slash und Duff McKagan, dem ehemaligen Bassisten der Guns N' Roses, ein instrumentales Stück ein. Noch ein ehemaliger Gunner war mit von der Partie: Steve Adler, das seinerzeitige erste Opfer von Heroin und Sänger Axl Rose.
Neben dem Namen des Gitarristen ziert das Cover ein weiterer Schriftzug: "R&FN'R" - kurz für "Rock and Fuckin' Roll", eine passende Inhaltsangabe. Die Nummern kann man als klassischen Hardrock bezeichnen, manche wurden noch für die mittlerweile sängerlose Formation Revolverheld geschrieben, der Slash nach Ende des Projektes Slash' Snakepit angehört(e). Viele Songs wurden mit den Gästen abgestimmt, so dass etwa "Doctor Alibi" mit Lemmy durchaus eine Prise Motörhead durchweht.
