Die Ausgangslage ist eine Wette:
"Can I Land a Plane First Try
Long time 2+2 member but haven't been here in a while. Wasn't sure where to post this, but I'll try here in OOT.
Like the title says, I have a prop bet made that I can't (or can) take off and land a Cessna 172 on the first attempt. I've never been in a private plane. It will take place this summer in July.
I posted this bet on several flying boards, but got absolutely no love. In three cases, the post wasn't even put up by the mods. So, I ask the wise members of 2+2, is this even interesting? I guess I can't help but think it is. I kinda doubt it's been tried before, and most pilots and people in general I've talked to seem to think it is such a long shot, it's dumb to even talk about. I suppose that's why no one seems to care.
I was going to wait before posting the details, to see if anyone even gave a crap, but I think I'll just lay it out now, and see what people think. I suppose any thoughts at all on it would be welcome.
I've made the bet with a buddy at work. He's says success is a total joke. I made the original claim that I could do it because I have booked tons of hours on my computer flight simulator, and am pretty damn good at flying -- on the computer. He's a card player, like me, and a gambler, so he immediately called me out with a prop bet. Long story short, we've got an ex United Airlines pilot (over 5000 hours) who is a certified flight instructor, who has agreed to sit with me in the Cessna and let me try. The C-172 has dual yokes and is used as a training plane, and he has assured me he won't let me kill myself (nor him). Per his requirement, we'll be flying out of a remote single strip airport in Lancaster, California.
The rules are that he will do all the preflight checks and the plane will be ready to go. He will communicate with the tower for clearance and such, and will taxi us out to the runway and line me up for take off. Weather will have to be clear and calm. After that, he can't say or do anything to assist me, from the moment I push in the throttle. If we encounter any other air traffic, which is unlikely at this location, he will take over and, steer us clear, then I'm back on the controls. Once I (hopefully) land, he would take over and taxi us back to the parking area."
